Class 2 – Beech

Welcome to the Beech Class page

In Year 2, we aim to spark curiosity, build confidence, and foster a love of learning. Our exciting topics and experiences are designed to support children as they grow into more independent learners. We encourage the children to take increasing responsibility for their learning, build resilience, and take pride in their progress.

In Year 2, we explore a wide range of high-quality texts, both fiction and non-fiction. Some of our favourites include: The Disgusting Sandwich, The Minpins, and The Bear and the Piano. Alongside these engaging stories, we develop our non-fiction writing through looking at events and significant individuals, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Queen Victoria, and Ernest Shackleton.

We also enjoy bringing our learning to life through trips, including a visit to the East Anglian Transport Museum - an exciting opportunity that links with our topic work Transport Through Time.

Reading is at the heart of everything we do. We read a chapter book in class each half term and encourage every child to read widely and often, helping them to discover genres and authors that truly inspire them. We ask parents and carers to support this at home by reading with their child regularly—just a few minutes a day makes a big difference!

Maths in Year 2 is exciting and practical—we use hands-on activities, games, and real-life problems to help children build strong number knowledge, develop fluency, and enjoy working with numbers.

Another opportunity for Year 2 is at Christmas, where the children take on starring roles in our Key Stage 1 Nativity! This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to develop their singing, acting, and performance skills while building confidence and having lots of fun.

It’s a fantastic year full of discovery, creativity, and growth—we can’t wait to see what your child will achieve!
