PSHE & RSE

Personal Social Health and Economic Education (PSHE) & Relationship and Sex Education (RSE)

PSHE

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, PSED (Personal, Social and Emotional Development) is a Prime area. Children who are competent in PSED have a secure foundation of the skills needed for other areas of the Foundation Stage Curriculum e.g. Literacy and Mathematics Development. PSED is divided into three areas: Making Relationships, Self Confidence and Self Awareness, and Managing Feelings and Behaviour.

The children develop these skills through whole class circle time, group activities and in their free play. They are encouraged and supported to:

  • separate from their carer
  • select resources with increasing independence
  • become confident to talk to other children and adults about themselves and their ideas
  • speak in a group about their ideas and preferences
  • form friendships with others
  • play in a group and involve others in their play
  • demonstrate friendly behaviour
  • be aware of others feelings
  • follow the behavioural expectations for the school
  • share resources

RSE

The aims of Relationship and Sex Education at our school are to:

  • Provide a framework in which sensitive discussions can take place.
  • Prepare pupils for puberty and give them an understanding of sexual development and the importance of health and hygiene.
  • Help pupils develop feelings of self-respect, confidence and empathy.
  • Create a positive culture around issues of sexuality and relationships.
  • Teach pupils the correct vocabulary to describe themselves and their bodies.
  • Promote our school's ethos and values of everyone being nurtured and enabled to grow and develop to reach their full potential.
